HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss softball completed a doubleheader sweep of Alcorn State (7-6 and 10-8) on Thursday night behind a season high 18 hits in the first game and five strikeouts in the second game.

The Golden Eagles had a duo of pitchers in the first game. Kim Crowson pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs (two earned), on seven hits. Jade Lewis came in for Crowson and improved to 2-0 on the season after pitching 3 1/3 innings and only allowed two runs on two hits.

In the circle for game two, Jillian Johnson got the nod for her sixth start of the season. Johnson who pitched a complete game moves to 4-1 on the season after only allowing seven runs on eleven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Southern Miss 7 Alcorn State 6

Southern Miss got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning with a Heather Hill double brought Caitlyn Aldous in for the first run.

Alcorn State had two runs off no hits in the top of the second and took the lead, 2-1. Southern Miss came back in the bottom of the second with two runs on four hits. Tori Dew knocked a single up the middle to set the Golden Eagles up. Jade Lewis singled to left center and advanced to second on the throw to put Dew in scoring position. A Bailey Stokes triple brought the two runners home. Southern Miss took back the lead 3-2.

Both teams had multiple hits in the fourth inning. The Lady Braves brought in two runs on four hits with the help of one error but left three stranded in the process. The Golden Eagles responded right away with a run on two hits. Eva Scott doubled to left center and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Tori Dew knocked an RBI double to right center brining Scott home. The score after four was tied 4-4.

In the bottom in the fifth, the Black and Gold had two more runs on five hits. Selena Estrada singled down the right foul line, Kaelyn Christofferson singled through the left side, and Eva Scott singled to left center brining Estrada home. A Tori Dew single up the middle scored Christofferson. Southern Miss took the lead back 6-4.

Alcorn State was the lone scoring team in the sixth with a solo homerun by Vanessa Sanders. The Lady Braves turned around and in the seventh had one more run to tie up the game on two hits. The lead was short lived.

The Golden Eagles going into the bottom of the seventh tied with Alcorn was ready to seal the deal. Christofferson had a single to third base, Eva Scott doubled to left field and then Dew was intentionally walked to set up the bases loaded with no outs scenario. Bailey Stokes singled and it brought in Christofferson for the winning score.

The Lady Braves get on the board first with a double to right center and then an RBI single to left field but end the inning with a groundout.

Southern Miss came out strong in the second inning of the second game scoring five runs on four hits. Chase Nelson was walked, then turned around and stole second. Jillian Johnson singled up the middle bringing Nelson in for the first Southern Miss run of the second game. Christofferson singled to left center and then Samantha Reynolds was walked, loading the bases. Holifield with an RBI sac fly brought Johnson home but there was a throwing error by the Lady Braves and Christofferson scored on it. Tori Dew with an RBI single and Samantha Papp finished the inning with an RBI single.

In the fourth inning, the teams exchanged home runs. Alcorn had a solo home run and then the Golden Eagles responded with a Holifield home run. Amber Pack came in for Eva Scott and proceeded to knock a solo home run to left field. It was her first of her Golden Eagle career. The score up to this point was 7-2, Southern Miss.

The Lady Braves in the top of the fifth inning loaded the bases and then hit an absolute bomb to bring in four runs, the Black and Gold had enough of a lead that it chipped away but it wasn’t enough. Southern Miss maintained the lead 7-6.

The Golden Eagles notched three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. A Pack single, Rouse walk and a Nelson single set them in scoring position. Jillian Johnson doubled to right field bringing Pack and Nelson home. Christofferson with a sac fly to left field brings Nelson home. Southern Miss ended the inning up 10-6.

Alcorn State tried to rally in the top of the seventh with two runs on three hits but it wasn’t enough. The game ended with Southern Miss on top 10-8 and complete the doubleheader sweep against Alcorn State.
